The North Devon Journal Archive

The North Devon Journal was first published in 1824 and covers the general North Devon area. In 1941 it merged with The North Devon Herald to become The North Devon Journal-Herald. Later on it reverted back to it’s original title and continues today.  Over the years the North Devon Athenæum has built up a substantial collection of original newspapers of both the Journal and Herald (which started in 1870)  a few editions of which are the only known ones to be in existence in the country.

There is a card index done by subject to the Journals from 1850 to 1895 (with gaps) along with a separate surname index.  There is also an index to the notices of Births, Marriages and Deaths covering the period 1827 to 1949 (again with gaps)

Indexes to the North Devon Journals are being expanded all the time, so please ask if there have been any recent additions.

In conjunction with the North Devon Local Studies Library there is almost a complete run of North Devon Journals available on microfilm and copies can be ordered from them.  Digital images can also be ordered from the originals on request and usually take three to five working days to do.

The North Devon Athenæum also holds some 6000 glass negatives from the 1950s and original negatives from 1960-2004.  At the moment we are still in the process of listing all of the negatives from 1960-2004 and so only a very small selection are available.

Images from the negatives can be done on request but take about a week to ten days to produce.

The digitisation of the glass negatives has now been completed and can be viewed on our catalogue and we have also started to digitise some of the film negatives.
